About Navy Federal
Founded by and for people in uniform, Navy Federal grew from a small Navy bureau credit union into one of the largest member-owned financial cooperatives serving the military community.
Origins in the Navy
The institution traces its origins to 1933, when a small group of employees at the Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington pooled their savings into a credit union. The goal was practical: give Navy personnel and their families a safe place to save and a fair source of credit during difficult economic years.
Over the following decades the field of membership widened steadily. Service widened first across Navy-related organizations and later across the entire armed forces community, eventually including the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard and Space Force, along with guard and reserve components, retirees and veterans.
A member-owned cooperative
Navy Federal operates as a not-for-profit credit union. Every account holder is a member and a part-owner, with an equal vote in governance regardless of balance size. A volunteer board of directors, elected by the membership, sets policy and oversees operations.
Because there are no outside shareholders, surplus earnings return to members in practical forms: competitive rates on savings and loans, lower fees and continued investment in digital services. The cooperative structure is the reason member benefit, rather than profit, remains the stated measure of success.
Who is eligible for membership
Eligibility flows from military affiliation. The common pathways include:
- Active duty personnel in any branch of the armed forces
- Guard and reserve members, retirees and veterans
- Department of Defense personnel in eligible locations
- Immediate family and household members of existing members
Once established, membership continues for life, even after separation from service or relocation abroad. Family connections mean membership frequently spans generations within the same household.
Values that shape the service
The institution's materials emphasize service before self, financial readiness and long-term relationships with members who move frequently and deploy often. Educational resources, counseling and deployment-friendly account features, described on the military support page, follow from those priorities.
The digital channels covered by this guide reflect the same orientation. The online banking and mobile app pages describe everyday account management, while the security guide explains the protection layers around every session.
